"How I Feel" Series of Six
A good friend of mine who is a mental health therapist recently asked me if I had ever thought about creating artwork for specific emotions as part of an "Emotions" series. It was a fun discussion, and led me to wondering how I might visually depict the ways that emotions affect my own life. How I Feel was created out of this curiosity.
Each 8x10 original artwork is framed in a handsome Golden State frame sized 11x14. The frame is a sturdy aluminum with a real glass cover, ready to hang.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
How I Feel is a series that journeys into the visceral landscape of human emotions, digging deep into the highs and lows and every nuance in between that is the human experience. It is an excavation of my personal experience with each emotion in which I attempt to describe how it feels to the viewer by building a visual vocabulary of color, line and texture. My hope is that the viewer would find reflections of their own experience of these emotions and feel less alone in that space.
I created these paintings using acrylic, pencil and chalk on heavy watercolor paper. For each emotion, I remembered a time in my life when I experienced it, and thought about what that emotion looked like; what shape it was, what colors were involved, etc. From there I began intuitively putting down layers of color and form. The abstraction in my work allows viewers to project their own feelings and interpretations onto the canvas, creating a dialogue between the art and the observer.
How I Feel is not just an exploration of personal feeling but also an invitation for collective empathy. In a world that often demands emotional composure, this series is a celebration of vulnerability and a call to feel your feelings. Each piece is a testament to the beauty found in our emotional depths, and it is my hope that viewers will find a part of themselves within the work, allowing them to connect with their own emotional truths.
